on that in a moment thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. >>> i'm eric thomas. police are getting help from highway patrol first full day with extra chp officers patrolling streets to help stem a rising tide of crime. terry mcsweeney is live in oakland. >> reporter: at the substation is where chp officers reported for duty last night a spokeswoman tells me they were involved the officers were in several arrests and impounded a number of cars last night. interestingly, chp officers reported here at 7 p.m., 7:30 there was a violent crime. video of the grocery outlet, 2900 broadway, man with a gun robbed the place, customers were in the store at the time. it was a customer who called it in. that comes one day after an east oakland businessman wilbur bartley was shot and killed at his store on international boulevard. homicides in oakland up 20% this year over last. last week when the governor announced chm would help oakland pd. >> i can ahead -- -- i can afford some level of cooperation between highway patrol and sheriffs until my academies turn out more officers. >> reporter: oakland pd understaffed

in the day when it was hard to find a store that was open on thanksgiving. well, toys r us are having special hours today, they opened at 8:00. and just about an hour ago, there were about half a dozen people in the line. ask now it extends about three dozen or more people down the line. sears and walmart will be opening at 8:00. target plans to open at 9:00, that is three hours earlier than last year, and other stores such as best buy are sticking to their midnight times, but they're offering up deep discounts, like laptops up to $180 to draw people in, people who are waiting are saying that it's worth it for the deals, and some away they came for the fun of it, but certainly during they say tough economic times, they're looking for some of the deals as these stores want to keep these lines running. >> now we go to kara lou with that best buy in emeryville with why experts say that online shopping could affect the black friday turn out this year. >> reporter: well, heather this is one of the healthier lines, and as the wraps around the store. more than 165 people in line. but customers tell

in the bay." >>> good morning to you, thanks for joining us. i'm laura gaurg-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelly. we have new details after a wild police chase ended in a heap of twisted metal and shattered glass. a drunk driver under arrest and we just learned a bicyclist has been released from the hospital. bob redell is live in san francisco with the latest on this wild scene there, bob. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. yes, that driver chp tells us her name is serena borrows. she's a 23-year-old woman and they el us it's not the first time she's been arrested for dui. she ended up crashing her car here at 17th and van ness where she also took out a signal box, which is one reason they have flares set up in the streets because the lights are still out as the city of san francisco tries to fix the mess that she allegedly created. her first collision during this chase throughout the city took place not far from her, 15th and natoma where she hit a bicyclist. he was next to a car that she ran into. that car hit him and he was taken to the hospital as a precaution, minor injuries.

marital affair. tara merger joins us from washington. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. jill kelly a long time friend of the petraeus family apparently went to the fbi several months ago with her concerns and that led o to a revelation about the affair. and now congressments more information about the fbi's investigate. >> reporter: cbs has learned this girl, jill kelly triggered an investigation leading to the resignation of david petraeus. petraeus resigned friday after word got out he was having an affair with his biographer paula broadwell. his resignation caught many off guard. kelly went to the fbi after allegedly receiving e-mails from broadwell warning her to back off and stay away from my guy. officials say broadwell believed kelly was a romantic rival. broadwell made this comment about petraeus during a publicity tour. >> i think he has been a terrific role model for young people. >> reporter: congressional leaders say they are going to start an inquiry of their own. >> this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told.

with the gunman. christian captain joins us with the details and how the morning commute is being affected so far. good morning christian. >> reporter: first off, we got an update from police who said again because of the proximity of where this is all happening, leading on to treasure island because it is such a narrow area they are not allowing people on or off the island and they are requesting no helicopters be flown over because it could affect the negotiations with this suspect who is at that access road leading tonight treasure island. and that access on and off treasure island is completely shut down in both directions. we have video of the suspect out of his vehicle sitting on a railing and san francisco police were all around him and they informed us this started as a police pursuit at 11:00 last night. police said during that pursuit, the suspect fired at least one shot at officers and they chased him and he began holding a gun to his own head threatening suicide. the suspect is believed to be duncan phillips and he is wanted for assault and for stealing a car in venetia. residents of

killed in the south bay will be laid to rest today. matt keller joining us live with more on the service and the update on the investigation there to the case. >> reporter: yeah. i checked in with the san jose police department spokesperson for the update on this case. they are still search for a second suspect or at least that's what was happening all this week as they released a sketch on that expect now hee mailed me back and said per the homicide unit we aren't confirming or denying any new information. that came after i asked them if an arrest had been made. >> the man was shot and killed last week. one of the suspects a 26-year- old was in court wednesday. police say he and another man robbed four businesses, murdered a 22-year-old in a carjacking and participated in a shoot out with two officers one of the officers was hit and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. willbanks was arrested the next morning. officers released a sketch of the second suspect, a 20,000- dollar reward is being offered for his arrest. the funeral for the victim is being held this morning at 11. we wi

a helicopter which illuminating the hillside. they used a he can-seeking mechanism -- a heat seeking mechanism. >> they found a heat source on the side of the hill. we had our rescue team repel down the hill to look for where the chp stated they saw the heat source and we found nothing. we have the sheriff dive team out here. >> it was very slippery. some of his men started to slip down the hill. they were tethered. the dive team is going into the water and two members will look around. it is unknown at this point how long they will be in the water. this is something they are used to and it is an all volunteer team. the fact that it is raining out and it is dark means nothing. once they get underwater they will try to find this victim. this quarry is filled with water . in some areas it is estimated to be between 40 and 80 feet. there is no current. it is surrounded. dive teams from the alameda county sheriff's department will be going in shortly. unknown how long they will be in the water. john alston, abc news. >> thank you. rain is coming down now in oakland and across much of the bay area.
